Week 4 Woman Artists

Image
For this weeks zoom discussion we read and explored “Why have there been no great woman artists?” By the art historian Linda Nochlin. It examines feminist art history, it also discusses feminist theory and sexual politics. Historically, there have been many obstacles that woman artists have had to go through to be recognized as fine artists and taken seriously. The author Linda Nochlin expresses how unappreciated woman artists have been in history and how as a society we accept what is known to be “normal” which has historically been white men creating famous, worthy, and expensive art work, and women do not. Nochlin analyzes Art history by questioning the social and institutional structures of the production of art, the world of art, and art history. She talks about the lack of education women received in the arts historically and how that contributed to the lack of art being produced by women. Women were often the subject matter in a piece of art rather than being the talent beh...

Week 3 Aura

In "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" (1935), Walter Benjamin addresses the artistic and cultural, social, economic, and political functions of art in a capitalist society.  Benjamin challenges art work authenticity, value, production and politics. This reading made me think about how when you enter a gallery, photography isn’t aloud. It is important to retain original ideas and prevent art work replications. In one class we debated whether or not there are any original ideas, it was an interesting topic to discuss especially in fine arts. During our zoom class we discussed how putting replicas of famous fine art work on novelty items like t-shirts, socks, or magnets can affects the original art works worth. In one way, it extends the reach and audience of the art. More people see it that wouldn’t be able to see it in person. If the artist was gaining revenue from all of the replicated work, they would be extremely wealthy from it. Especially because it i...

Week 2 Beauty

Image
For this assignment we read and annotated "Every man knows where and how beauty gives him pleasure": Beauty Discourse and the Logic of Aesthetics by Amelia Jones response to Dave Hickey's book, The Invisible Dragon: Four Essay's on Beauty.   Dave Hickey argues for the unruly vitality of the human imagination against forces of economic, political, and academic control. It’s a book that wants art to be made in a state of absolute individual freedom, where forms and ideas contend for survival in an imaginative free market governed by nothing but desire: the desire to make art and the desire to see or own it. He believes that ideas expire but beauty stays the same throughout time.  Dave Hickey believed himself to be the arbiter of beauty because he thought that his opinions were superior, or had a great influence or authority over what others might believe beauty is. What Hickey does is different than what art historians do because Hickey wrote about how art work looke...

Introduction

My name is Leilani.  My major is BFA Studio Art. I am excited to explore art history this semester. I enjoy making art and snowboarding. I’ve included a picture of myself and my dogs.  I chose this painting by Leonid Afremov  because it gives me a peaceful feeling. I believe it is beautiful because I like the colors, the style, and it makes me feel like I am there in the park walking in the rain. This is subjective, because the art work provokes a feeling that not everyone would agree on.  https://www.google.com/search?q=beautiful+art+work&rlz=1C9BKJA_enUS968US969&hl=en-US&prmd=isvn&sxsrf=ALiCzsbGGEnvWH56UWyiRxr-E5fdkbGMLw:1663099312519&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwisuP7dx5L6AhURoFsKHaofCJEQ_AUoAXoECAMQAQ&biw=1080&bih=695&dpr=2#imgrc=KvL5jo4RMKZsyM&imgdii=OlodTj7r31XHqM&lnspr=W10=
